April 14-18

CCSSHappy Monday! This week will begin with our students starting to test on the new Common Core Standards. Below is the schedule for CCSS testing:

  • April 14-18- 6th grade
  • April 21-25- 5th grade
  • April 28-May 2- 4th grade
  • May 5-9- 3rd grade

As with all testing, please make sure your children get a good nights sleep and eat a good breakfast prior to starting their day. As a reminder breakfast is available to all students before school in our cafeteria. As we’ve discussed previously students will be taking all CCSS assessments on a provided computer. Most testing will last for the first 3 to 4 hours of school, so please do your best to make sure they arrive on time and are not taken out of school early. Also remember that the school will not be receiving results of this years tests. This is the states opportunity to identify the challenges we may face with this new assessment and get those problems solved. If you have any concerns or questions regarding testing please contact Principal Mora.

April 7-11

welcome-back-to-school-sign-580x444Welcome Back! First things first, parents please don’t forget Monday, April 7 students will be returning to school. The schedule for Monday is as follows:

  • All students starting at 8:15 am
  •  Kinder will dismiss students at 12:30 pm with parent supervision
  •  Grades 1st thru 6th dismiss at 1:15 pm

As we begin the 4th quarter we will continue to prepare our students for success on the rigorous Common Core Standards and Local Measures Assessments. The Local Measures are a set of assessments in Reading, Writing and Math which are District created assessments. These tests give us a third tool to use in measuring student progress, the other two being the State Common Core Assessment and classroom data gathered by the teacher. Individually these sets of data give a snapshot of how a student is performing, but together they provide a much clearer picture as to the progress a student has made.

This year will be very unique in that it will be the first year our students have the opportunity to take the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) assessment. The assessment will be done completely online via a computer, which is also a first for our students. Another difference is that only 3rd thru 6th graders will be required to take the CCSS and it will only cover Language Arts and Math. Kinder thru 2nd will only take the District created Local Measures Assessments. Finally, the last unique difference for this year is that the school will not receive test results from the CCSS as this is a practice year to “test the test”. The state realized that since this is the first year with so many unique changes, there are bound to be challenges. Challenges such as computers not working, networks “freezing”, and overall logistic issues that may affect student performance. With this in mind it would not be fair to judge students knowing there may be flaws that need to be fixed. As such we will report all problems and anticipate the assessment to be ready to go in 2015. As a parent you can look forward to getting results from the classroom created assessments as well as the Local Measures assessments.  If you have any questions, please speak to your classroom teacher or administration.
