Parents of English Learners Needed for McMillin’s English Language Advisory Committee

Please join our English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) for the 2016-2017 school year. The primary task of the ELAC is to ensure that McMillin’s programs and budget are aligned to provide the best possible instructional program for all English Learners at McMillin. As a member of the English Learner Advisory Committee, you will learn more about school programs and participate in making decisions that impact teaching and learning at McMillin, especially support for English Learners.

The majority of McMillin ELAC members need to be parents of English Learners, and members are elected by parents of English Learners.

ELAC will meet every other month from 8:40-10:15 a.m. If you are willing to serve on the English Learner Advisory Committee, please provide a brief introduction of yourself and briefly explain why you would like to be on the English Learner Advisory Committee.  Please provide this to the front office by Friday, August 5th. The information you provide will be attached to the ELAC ballot to help parents vote.

Celebrating Student Birthdays at McMillin

images

Dear Parents,

I would like to welcome all of you back for the 2016-2017 school year!  Though it was just a few weeks ago we were ending the school year, the staff and I are very excited to begin another successful year with your children.  The purpose of this letter is to bring attention to our District policy on birthdays and celebrations which will continue to be in effect for this school year.

Effective July 24, 2013, class parties and birthdays MUST follow the CVESD Board approved Wellness Policy. The District’s local wellness policy, which was established after Congress passed a law that requires school districts to establish a local wellness policy that applies to every school in the district. The policy assists schools in improving the overall health of students by promoting healthy eating.  (CVESD BP 5030)  Our policy states that NO celebratory food items will be allowed on school sites during the school day in celebration of student’s birthday (i.e. no cupcakes, sugary juices, soda, pizza, chips, ice-cream, pop-corn, etc.)

We recognize that celebrating your child’s birthday is a joyous event, one that you may continue to celebrate here at school.  However, only non-food items will be allowed at school.

  • Non-food suggestions: coloring books, crayons, jump ropes, mini-Frisbees, balls, books, school supplies, stickers, pencils, erasers, white board markers, etc.

Any food items brought to school for celebrations will be sent back home with your child at the end of the day.

We appreciate your support and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or the school office.  As with past years, all celebrations must be approved by your child’s teacher prior to the day of the celebration.  All celebrations will take place at the end of the day before dismissal.

For more information on the wellness policy and Board Policies, please visit www.cvesd.org/district/boardpolicies

Sincerely,

Cindy Orr, Principal

Communication:

  1. Blog: This year we will work hard to improve communication with our community, a great way to stay informed is to read our blog which will be updated every 2 weeks.TExt
  2. Text messaging: Our District is sending out the SMS flyer Eng and Span  via Peachjar electronic distribution to encourage more parents to opt-in. You can receive text messages from both the school site and the District. This is especially important in a crisis or emergency.
  3. School Messenger for parent notification: We will also send out regular School Messenger voice mails, so please make sure we have updated email addresses and phone numbers to ensure you receive all communication.

Important Reminders:Morning Lineup

  • 1st through 6th-grade students are to line up in the back of the school each morning, Morning Line Assignments McMillin staff will be present and can assist students and families in finding their lines.

  • Dismissal M-Th for 1st Through  6th grade will be at 2:45 pm, Fridays at 1:15 pm (TK and Kinder parents please check with your teachers for your schedule)
  • Students being picked up by car will be picked up on the playground. Staff will be out the first couple of weeks to guide you to your pick-up spot.
  • No classroom changes will be considered until after the first 10 days of school.
  • If you have any information you believe will help us to support your child, please communicate that information with your teacher ASAP
  • Wed. July 20 will be an early release day for all students 1st-6th (1:15 pm)
  • There is no student drop off on RED CURBS!!! You will be ticketed.

Traffic flow for after school pick up:

Take a look at the map below for a visual on the traffic flow. Any students not picked up by 3 pm will walk to the front of the school for pick-up. This flow minimizes the backup on Santa Cora Ave. I urge you to continue to follow all traffic rules and please exhibit common courtesy at all times. All cars must move as far forward as possible to keep the traffic flowing. Do not stop in the middle of the flow and call your child over to you. Rather than have them wait for you at the pick-up area and quickly enter the car, then continue driving.
google map

Finally, we need volunteers to help us keep traffic flowing, put out and pick up traffic cones and to guide students to the appropriate areas. If you are able to contribute 20 minutes of your time after school, please let me know. If everyone does, a little a lot can be accomplished.

Thank you
