This week at McMillin

img_0520After spending a snowy week with my two boys over Thanksgiving, I thought about how much I wanted to give this growing young adults advice after advice. I worry, and I want them to be the best they can be. How are your grades? You are not eating healthy? Are you working out? Are you going studying enough? Are you spending too much money? As you can imagine, when I ask these type of questions, they just stop talking to me and I get the “ya”. So I caught myself and instead I told them how proud I was every chance I got.

This is the questions that I posed to teachers this week. As a parent, you may think about substituting “my child” for “students”.

“We learn with best from positive feedback, academically and emotionally. How much positive feedback do you give to your students? What about the students that are quiet and always good? Are there students that don’t get any positive feedback from you?”

What do you notice if you only gave positive feedback for a week?

Make sure your positive feedback is frequent and specific.

  • What did the student do well?
  • What is great about their work?
  • What effort did they put in?
  • What challenges did they face in completing their work?
  • What did they do to make a difference to others or to their learning?

  • The November full moon – also known as a Beaver Moon – is at its closest position to Earth since Jan. 26, 1948, about 30,000 miles nearer than it typically is. That proximity will make the moon seem 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than normal.

Students Must Wear Helmets

Dear Families,

McMillin Elementary is committed to keeping our students safe and we believe that bicycle helmets are not an option when it comes to ensuring the safety of our children.  In addition, California law requires that anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when riding on a street, bikeway or public bicycle path or trail. This includes children who are riding to school.

If your child rides a bike, scooter, or skateboard to school they must wear a helmet.  Starting the week of November 14th, we will begin issuing written reminders to students who are not wearing helmets.  After the winter break teachers will begin holding bikes, skateboards, and scooters of those students who do not have a helmet.  If a bike, skateboard, or scooter is taken from a student, it will only be released when a child has a helmet or when a parent picks up the bike, scooter, or skateboard.

Please help us in keeping your child safe by requiring that your child wears a helmet.

Thank you for your support,

November 7th – 11th at McMillin

If you were looking into getting a computer, this is a great offer for our families.
