Hybrid Learning Information and Week of January 25th-29th at McMillin

Here is the recording from our Principal’s Chat from last Friday.

Here are some FAQS about the Hybrid Model and the Re-opening Plan:

Q: When are you thinking of a return, or expansion of in-person instruction? We had hoped to reopen campuses using a staggered schedule and small classes in late January, but that does not appear likely given the current surge in COVID-19 cases. As part of our agreement with Chula Vista Educators, our District can reopen to in-person instruction starting with a “hybrid” instructional format—provided that all health and safety conditions are met. A key condition is that San Diego County return to the “red” level as defined in the state’s tiered system. However, our County is currently in the most restrictive “purple” tier. So, at this time, it is difficult to predict when San Diego County will transition from purple to red and allow for a safe return. The most recent county COVID-19 data can be found using the following link: https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemiology/dc/2019-nCoV/status.html

Q: How many days a week would we return to in-person instruction? Students would attend school four days a week (M-Th) on an a.m./p.m. schedule. Students would have Fridays reserved for distance learning from home.

Q: What is a hybrid learning model? A combination of in-person and distance learning.  Hybrid instructional scenarios would be designed to reduce the number of students on campus by up to 50% of normal.

Q: Will the vaccine be required of students? Staff? At this time there is no requirement or mandate to be vaccinated for students or staff. We highly recommend those individuals who are medically able and could become vaccinated to do so to help reduce the spread within our community. Currently, there are requirements under California law for students entering school to receive a prescribed group of vaccines and verify proof. If at some point in time the COVID-19 vaccine will become a requirement for students, public employees or private employees, we will be sure to communicate with parents/guardians and our staff.

Q: Will my student have the same teacher she started within distance learning? Depending on parent responses, and scheduling considerations, there is a possibility that your child’s current teacher may change.

Q: Please explain the protocol for classroom quarantine if there is a positive COVID-19 case at school. If a child or adult in a classroom tests positive for COVID-19, the entire class/cohort will be asked to stay home for 14 days from the point of the last contact with the individual. Also, any other individual that was indirect, close contact for 15 minutes or more with the person who tested positive will also be asked to remain at home. The classroom will be disinfected in accordance with recommendations from public health agencies.

Q: Many other hybrid models have alternating days/weeks at a time. If school days are Mon-Thurs as proposed, when will sanitizing happen and how thorough will it be? We explored various hybrid models with our teacher bargaining group. Our current agreement entails a Mon.-Thurs. format, with Fridays for student distance learning. Sanitizing classrooms will occur every day of the week that students are present.

Q: Is the asynchronous instruction independent/not live instruction? Yes, asynchronous instruction is analogous to “homework”. All students are to be completing asynchronous work after their live instruction (synchronous). The time that students are to be doing asynchronous work is dependent on their grade level in both the Distance Learning Model and the Hybrid Model.

Q: If the tier changes from red back to purple, will this hybrid learning revert back to distance learning? The decision to move back to the Distance Learning Model after opening the Hybrid Model of instruction would depend on San Diego County Health Department, Superintendent, and School Board to decide.

Q: In the Hybrid Model, how many students would be in the classroom? We have determined to maintain the distancing of 6 feet apart in all classrooms the maximum capacity would be16. This number would include students, teachers, and aides.

Q: What is the sanitizing process and chemicals used to disinfect classrooms in between cohorts? The disinfectant used is called Virex II 256. Here is the SDS sheet: Virex SDS. It is approved for school use and it disinfects against Corona viruses.
