2nd Chance Breakfast at McMillin

December 11, 2015

Dear McMillin Families,

As you know, it is extremely important that students begin the school day with a healthy meal so they are ready to learn once they enter class.  For this reason, all students are offered breakfast before school.

Unfortunately, many students are not eating breakfast before school and are waiting to eat until recess to get a “Second Chance Breakfast.”  A Second Chance Breakfast consists of a cereal bar and milk.  This is a problem for several reasons:

  • recess doesn’t begin until 10:00, 10:20, or 10:40 for children
  • kids are missing their recess time to eat when they should be outside running and playing
  • lunch is served beginning at 11:00am and when children eat a Second Chance Breakfast, they are not hungry and miss the more nutritious meal

For these reasons, a Second Chance Breakfast will no longer be offered during recess beginning January 12, 2016.  We would like all students to arrive to school early enough to eat breakfast before class begins.  We are offering FREE breakfast to all students from 7:45-8:05 who come in the morning to eat this school year to help with this transition. You may also choose to have your child eat breakfast at home.

Because some children need extra nourishment between breakfast and lunch, students may continue to bring a healthy snack from home to eat during recess.

Thank you for your support during this transition. Please contact me should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Orr

McMillin Soccer Team Information

December 10, 2015

Dear Parents,

This year we will be bringing soccer back to McMillin with a Varsity Coed Team.  We know many students will be excited to try out for these teams.

The Varsity Coed Team consists of players from 2nd – 3rd  grade.  Any student can tryout regardless of previous experience.  Our goal is to promote a love of the game and teamwork.  We will learn how to keep position, and develop soccer skills.  With this attitude, regardless of the wins and losses, we can have a successful and fun season.

Potential players will have to fill out the permission slip that you can pick up in the office and return it by December 14, 2015 to the office.  Students trying out, need to attend a one day tryout on December 15th from 3:00 – 4:00 PM.  For the tryouts, soccer gear is encouraged but not necessary.  If your child makes the team, you will need to provide shin guards and soccer cleats for your child.

After the tryouts, players will be selected according to their demonstrated performance, attitudes, and the needs of the teams being formed.  If selected, parents of the players will need to complete other forms and agreements (a parent behavior/commitment promise and a concussion form) before the student is considered an official member of the team.

Once the team is selected, our practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:30.  When the season starts, we will continue to practice on Thursdays and Tuesday will be a game day with a game start time at 4pm.  Some games will be played here, while others will be played at other schools in Chula Vista.  For legal reasons, it is the players’ parents that are responsible for transportation to and from the games.

We look forward to the tryouts and to a season where each player grows, learns, and gains a deeper love for the game!

Thanks,

Mr. Valles, Head Coach

Dear Parents,

This year we will continue the tradition of basketball at McMillin Elementary School with a Beagle basketball team!

The basketball team will consist of both boys and girls from 4th-6th grade. Our goal is to promote a love of the game, teamwork, and positive attitudes.  We are looking forward to a successful and fun season!

Potential players will need to fill out the attached permission slip and return it to the office by December 14, 2015.  Students trying out for the team must attend both days of the tryouts: Tuesday, December 15th and Thursday, December 17th (after school from 3 pm to 4 pm at the playground basketball courts).  For the tryouts, please bring a basketball (if you have one) and wear appropriate shoes.

After the tryouts, players will be selected according to their performance, attitudes, and the needs of the team.  If selected, parents of the players must complete a parent behavior/commitment promise and a concussion form before the student is considered an official member of the team.

The basketball season officially starts the week of January 19. We will have our first practice on Thursday, January 14 after school.  Practice times and game times thereafter are TBD (To Be Determined). Some games will be played at McMillin, while others will be played at other schools in Chula Vista.  For legal reasons, it is the players’ parent’s responsibility for transportation to and from the games.

We look forward to the tryouts and to a great season where each player grows, learns, and gains a deeper love for the game!
