Hanover Survey

parent surveyDear Parents/Guardians:

We want to inform you that we will be conducting an online parent survey which will end on March 20th, 2015.

With this survey, we hope to learn more about your experiences and your child(ren’s) experiences at school during this school year with teachers, administrators, students, and other District staff. All responses are anonymous and will never be connected to you – your answers will be kept strictly confidential. Reporting will rely on grouped percentages only.

If both parents/guardians in a household would like to take the survey, that is fine. However, we ask that each adult only take the survey once, and do so by March 20th, 2015. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the survey, please contact the District’s Operations Department at (619) 425-9600, ext. 1325.

Click on a link below or cut and paste into your browser to complete the parent survey:

imagesHappy Tuesday Everyone! I hope you had the chance to enjoy the beautiful weather of this past President’s Day weekend, but back to work we go 🙂 For the most part this short week will be relatively uneventful, but with only 4 weeks to go in the quarter there’s a lot of work to do. As many of you know this is the first official year of our new state tests, also known as Smarter Balanced or Common Core Test, as such teachers are preparing our students to be ready to show their mastery of these new standards. Our 3rd-6th graders will take the tests in language arts and math and over the next month they will have the opportunity to take some practice test. All of these assessments will be taken via the computer since this is how they will test in May. I encourage you to ask your kids how they felt after taking the practice test and also talk to your teacher to see what you can do to support your child.

superbowlHappy Monday Everyone! If you were like me you spent Sunday watching a great Super Bowl game surrounded by friends and family. Regardless of who you were rooting for, I’m sure you will agree it was an exciting game! As I was watching the game I started to see parallels between my staff and the two teams. Both work so hard to get ready and always try their best, both support their teammates, both overcome challenges and both care deeply about what they do. The result a great game or in McMillin’s case a great school!

Youth Sports
Speaking of sports, hopefully you’re aware that we’re getting ready to begin a great quarter of youth sports. Basketball, kickball, and soccer teams are all preparing for another exciting season of competition. We’re blessed to have staff and parents willing to give their personal time and coach the kids and we’d love to have as many people out their rooting the kids on. As soon as the schedules come out I’ll make sure to post them to add to your calendar. We’re also looking for sponsors to help defray some of the costs with uniforms, equipment, and referee fees. If you own a business or know of a business that would like to sponsor one or all of our teams please let us know. On behalf of the kids thank you!

Coffee with the Principal
On Thursday Feb 5 at 8:15 am I’ll be hosting my quarterly Coffee with the Principal in our auditorium. This is a great time to spend about 30 min learning about the different happenings at McMillin, as well as giving the community a chance to get answers to their questions. Hope to see you there.

Jan 19-23

AwarenesslogoEach year McMillin participates in what I believe is one of the most important exercises of empathy and acceptance, Ability Awareness Day. After spending this past Monday honoring the accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I think it’s fantastic that our students and the community have a chance to continue building on Dr. King’s dream where equity and faith in your fellow man is at the forefront of how we treat each other. Ability Awareness began at McMillin with our very own kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Diana Carson. Mrs. Carson believes by teaching today’s children and youth about disability from a perspective of dignity, respect, appreciation, and inclusion, we will create future generations that honor and appreciate differences and offer respectful opportunities and supports to people so that they are included within their communities. This year our Ability Awareness Day will land on Wednesday, Jan 21. We invite the entire McMillin community to come out and listen to the various guests that will be here talking to our students.

Kickball Parent Meeting
If you are a parent of one of our super Kickball players please come out to an informational meeting on Wed. Jan 21 at 4:30 pm.

ELAC Meeting Thursday Jan 22 8:30 am.

Mix It Up Lunch Day Thursday Jan 23
Students will be allowed to select their own place to sit at lunch. We hope this encourages them to meet new people, strengthening the bonds of friendship across our school.

Jan 13-Jan 16

welcome-back-to-school-sign-580x444Welcome Back Everyone! My apologies for my tardiness in having my blog ready for you, I suppose I should add this to my list of resolutions for the new year 🙂 The start of the 3rd quarter started out with a bang! We added 16 students to our roster and there were even more students that unfortunately will need to be overflowed to another nearby school until a space opens up. As of last count we had 899 students! Obviously our fantastic school has a great reputation and we’re excited to welcome our new families, as well as welcome back our veterans 🙂

Team Sports
We’re so excited to welcome back the addition of soccer to our team sports. This year Mr. Chumbley (1st grade teacher) and Mr. Robinson (parent) will be leading our teams. Please click on the links below for more information:

Also if anyone has any leads on good pricing for soccer goals and equipment please let us know. Thank you

Traffic
I want to thank everyone for all their support on making our new traffic procedures a resounding success. As most of you know we now have a new pick-up area, located on our blacktop. Please remember to talk to your child and let them know to meet you in the pick-up area. Also we remind you that if students aren’t picked up within 15 min after the dismissal bell they will be walked to the front of the school.

Contact Information
We’re asking all families to please make sure we have your most current contact information. Often people change their phone numbers and email addresses, but we must have a way to contact you in case of an emergency. If you recently changed your contact information please contact Mrs. Georgina Huezo at 619 397-0103 or georgina.huezo@cvesd.org with the correct updates.

Dec 1-5

decemberI hope everyone had a great break! It’s amazing how quickly (or slowly, depending on perspective) a week can go by. What’s even more amazing is that we only have 3 weeks left before we come to the end of our 2nd qtr.!!

Soccer
Thankfully we have two coaches ready to begin working with our future soccer stars. Officially, we will field a 4th thru 6th grade team and a 2nd thru 3rd grade team. Ideally we still need a couple of assistant coaches, so if you’re interested please let me know.

Traffic Update
Well after 10+ years of dealing with complaints of afternoon traffic, it appears as if we found a solution that finally worked. I want to thank everyone for the support given so far. There’s still a few small issues that need to be addressed, such as lowering the speed bump at the entrance to the playground and improving access to the pickup area. As always volunteers are welcomed.
