Teacher Appreciation Week – May 4th-May 8th

McMillin Teachers are Superheros!!

Please take a little time to appreciate our McMillin teachers. Distance Learning is not easy and now teachers’ role in your child’s learning has quickly changed. So let’s take a moment to appreciate them and all they are doing for your child.

We are planning to do a Superhero themed Teacher Appreciation Week.  We have scheduled opportunities that students can choose to do during the week of May 4-8:

Monday, May 4th – Send your teacher a picture of the following competed sentence:

My teacher is a superhero because  ___________.
You can add your faces to it if you would like. If you send the picture to me as well, I will post it on our blog. cynthia.orr@cvesd.org

Wednesday, May 6th

Send a photo or video of your child that reveals their superpowers, feel free to dress up in superhero gear, too.
I am a superhero because _________. If you send me a photo or video as well as your teacher, I will post on our blog. If you send it to me, you are granting me permission to post on our parent blog.  cynthia.orr@cvesd.org
Friday, May 8th – Send your teacher a gift: a picture, a letter, a gift card, a meal card, a note of appreciation, a short video, etc.
AND Thank you!!

Your Child’s School Supplies and Materials

Dear McMillin Families,

We have arranged a staggered schedule for the distribution of student materials and belongings that are in the classroom. This staggered schedule will help us deliver materials to parents safely. We can only have a few teachers packing up materials at a time and only have a grade level deliver at a time.

Your child’s belongings will be packed up in a labeled bag. We will be placing the bags in the trunk of your car. Please see the scheduled days and times below:

5th-grade and Upper SDC – Tuesday, May 5th between 8:30 – 10:30.

2nd-grade, 2/3 combination, and K/1 combination – Wednesday, May 6th between 8:30-10:30

6th-grade –Thursday, May 7th between 8:30-10:30

3rd-grade – Tuesday, May 12th between 9:30-11:30. *Changed time to 9:30

4th-grade – Wednesday, May 13th between 9:30-11:30. *Changed time to 9:30

1st-grade – Thursday, May 14th between 9:30-11:30. *Changed time to 9:30

Kindergarten – Thursday, May 14th between 9:30-11:30

Logistics for pick-up:

  • This will be a drive-by pick-up in McMillin’s School Bus loop.
  • The student’s belongings will be in a bag.
  • We place the bags in the trunk.
  • We will be at the curb and one helper will be the runner for the belongings. Belongings will be set up outside near the curb so the coordination should go quickly.
  • To help expedite the process, please have your child’s name and teacher written on an 8.5×11 sheet of paper (landscape view).
  • We will then get your child’s items and place them in your trunk.
  • Please stay in your car.

Thank you, everyone!

April 16th – Frequently Asked Questions about Distance Learning

Q: How long will CVESD schools be closed?

A: Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) facilities and campuses will remain closed for the remainder of the school year unless health officials determine it is safe to reopen.  Our District embarked on a Distance Learning initiative, which officially started on April 13. Our instructional team has worked diligently with our teacher leaders and peers from across San Diego County to rapidly develop plans to support students’ academic progress while at home.

Q: What is Distance Learning?

A: Distance learning means that learning opportunities are provided to students while the teacher and the student are in different locations, say outside the traditional classroom environment. Distance learning may include student-instructor interaction through the use of a computer and/or telecommunications technology to deliver instruction and check-in time. This may include video or audio instruction in which the primary mode of communication between the student and instructor is on-line interaction, instructional television, video, or other instruction that relies on printed materials (“packets”).

Q: Will my child be graded this Quarter?

A. Students will not receive grades or a report card this quarter. Students will go to their next grade level next school year. Students do not need to turn in assignments to be graded at the end of the week.

Q: I’ve heard a lot about testing being suspended. Which tests are they?

A: On March 18, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an Executive Order to waive, pending federal approval, this year’s statewide testing for California’s students. Currently, all statewide assessment has been suspended due to the school closures. The suspended tests include all California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments:

  • Smarter Balanced Assessment for English Language Arts and Mathematics (SBAC for ELA, Math)
  • California Science Test (CAST)
  • California Alternate Assessment for ELA, Mathematics, and Science (CAA for ELA, Math and Science)
  • California Spanish Test (CSA)

The annual summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) has been suspended as well. In addition, District Local Measure assessments will not be administered this spring. More information on the suspension of statewide testing and next steps are forthcoming.

Q: What are the meal service hours and locations?

A: The District will resume DAILY meal distribution at the nine school sites. These schools have a student population where 50 percent or more are on free/reduced priced meal program. Click here for a list of locations and map.

Q: How will you be supporting students with special needs during school closures?

A: The Special Education Department is working closely with the San Diego County Office of Education and the local SELPA office reviewing each resource available to carefully see how it can support special education students. We understand the importance of specialized academic instruction for each child and the related services to support their learning. That said, we are working on distance learning plans for students with teachers and service providers.

Q: Will I still be able to enroll my student for the 2019-20 school year or the 2020-21 school year?

A: Yes, please begin the registration process in the Online Enrollment system. School site staff working remotely will manage completing the registration with parents via email correspondence.

Q: How do I submit an Interdistrict Transfer Application?

A: There will be an update to the Transfer webpage providing an email address. Parents will be able to attach, scan or upload a photo of their transfer application and attachments (if applicable) when this is ready. Parents will be notified of the transfer decision via email (if provided) or US Mail.
