Hybrid Learning Information and Week of January 25th-29th at McMillin

Here is the recording from our Principal’s Chat from last Friday.

Here are some FAQS about the Hybrid Model and the Re-opening Plan:

Q: When are you thinking of a return, or expansion of in-person instruction? We had hoped to reopen campuses using a staggered schedule and small classes in late January, but that does not appear likely given the current surge in COVID-19 cases. As part of our agreement with Chula Vista Educators, our District can reopen to in-person instruction starting with a “hybrid” instructional format—provided that all health and safety conditions are met. A key condition is that San Diego County return to the “red” level as defined in the state’s tiered system. However, our County is currently in the most restrictive “purple” tier. So, at this time, it is difficult to predict when San Diego County will transition from purple to red and allow for a safe return. The most recent county COVID-19 data can be found using the following link: https://www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemiology/dc/2019-nCoV/status.html

Q: How many days a week would we return to in-person instruction? Students would attend school four days a week (M-Th) on an a.m./p.m. schedule. Students would have Fridays reserved for distance learning from home.

Q: What is a hybrid learning model? A combination of in-person and distance learning.  Hybrid instructional scenarios would be designed to reduce the number of students on campus by up to 50% of normal.

Q: Will the vaccine be required of students? Staff? At this time there is no requirement or mandate to be vaccinated for students or staff. We highly recommend those individuals who are medically able and could become vaccinated to do so to help reduce the spread within our community. Currently, there are requirements under California law for students entering school to receive a prescribed group of vaccines and verify proof. If at some point in time the COVID-19 vaccine will become a requirement for students, public employees or private employees, we will be sure to communicate with parents/guardians and our staff.

Q: Will my student have the same teacher she started within distance learning? Depending on parent responses, and scheduling considerations, there is a possibility that your child’s current teacher may change.

Q: Please explain the protocol for classroom quarantine if there is a positive COVID-19 case at school. If a child or adult in a classroom tests positive for COVID-19, the entire class/cohort will be asked to stay home for 14 days from the point of the last contact with the individual. Also, any other individual that was indirect, close contact for 15 minutes or more with the person who tested positive will also be asked to remain at home. The classroom will be disinfected in accordance with recommendations from public health agencies.

Q: Many other hybrid models have alternating days/weeks at a time. If school days are Mon-Thurs as proposed, when will sanitizing happen and how thorough will it be? We explored various hybrid models with our teacher bargaining group. Our current agreement entails a Mon.-Thurs. format, with Fridays for student distance learning. Sanitizing classrooms will occur every day of the week that students are present.

Q: Is the asynchronous instruction independent/not live instruction? Yes, asynchronous instruction is analogous to “homework”. All students are to be completing asynchronous work after their live instruction (synchronous). The time that students are to be doing asynchronous work is dependent on their grade level in both the Distance Learning Model and the Hybrid Model.

Q: If the tier changes from red back to purple, will this hybrid learning revert back to distance learning? The decision to move back to the Distance Learning Model after opening the Hybrid Model of instruction would depend on San Diego County Health Department, Superintendent, and School Board to decide.

Q: In the Hybrid Model, how many students would be in the classroom? We have determined to maintain the distancing of 6 feet apart in all classrooms the maximum capacity would be16. This number would include students, teachers, and aides.

Q: What is the sanitizing process and chemicals used to disinfect classrooms in between cohorts? The disinfectant used is called Virex II 256. Here is the SDS sheet: Virex SDS. It is approved for school use and it disinfects against Corona viruses.

Week of January 18th – 22nd at McMillin

CVESD’s back-to-school plan is a hybrid model because it is a combination of in-person classes (Mon.-Thur.) and at-home teacher-assigned/teacher-monitored student work (asynchronous instruction) that completes the minimum instructional minutes required by the State during the 2020-2021 school year.

McMillin School and the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) continue to prepare for an eventual return to school. Please complete a required Parent Survey by January 25, to help with re-opening plans.

Questions about the Hybrid Model

In reading some of your comments from the Parent Survey, I thought I would attempt to answer some of your questions.

  1. Q: What would the schedule be for my child? We are working on this at this time and know that this may change depending on how many students are going to come back to campus. There will be 155 minutes of instruction in each class. ***Please note that these times could change depending on grade level, amount of students.
    • Monday – Thursday AM Cohort: 8:15-11:00 am
    • Monday – Thursday PM Cohort: 12:15-3:00 pm
    • Friday – All Students will be in Distance Learning – Students will be on the same schedule as they are now.
    • No lunch or recess times – Students will not be eating lunch on campus. We will continue our Thursday lunch pickup for the week. (12:00-2:00pm).
    • Teachers will be encouraged to use outdoor areas for learning and to provide students with small breaks.
  2. Q: If there is no school on Friday, will students (currently enrolled in the Distance Learning Support Program- DLSP) be able to attend the DLSP on Fridays? A: Currently, CVESD has an operating agreement with the YMCA to continue executing the Distance Learning Support Program (DLSP) from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. through April 16, 2021.
  3. My child is in the YMCA childcare at McMillin. How about before and after-school care on Mon.-Thurs., especially if in-person instruction operates on a modified schedule? A: If students return to in-person instruction in a hybrid model, the DLSP will be available for students (who are already enrolled in the program) when they are not with their classroom teacher for in-person instruction. For example, if a student attends in-person instruction in the A.M. session, the DLSP will be available for that student in the afternoon. If a student attends in-person instruction in the P.M. session, the DLSP will be available for that student in the morning. When distance learning is utilized for all students on Friday, the DLSP will be available for DLSP-enrolled students from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. on that day.
  1. Q: Will the vaccine be required of students? Staff?A: At this time there is no requirement or mandate to be vaccinated for students or staff.
  2. How will students arrive and be dismissed: **This is our current thinking.

               Arrival:

    • Five (Color Coded) entry points will be established per grade level for arriving students.
      •  Health screening will be conducted at each entry point.
      •  Parents must wait for their child to be screened and admitted to school before leaving. Parents will not be allowed on campus.
      •  After screening, students walk to their classroom – stand on marked spots until invited into the classroom by teachers. (Kinder and TK will be walked to classrooms by staff, not parents)
      • Back Gate will not be open for arrivals.

      Dismissal:

      •  Students will be dismissed in small staggered groups.
      •  Students will be escorted off campus to pick-up and encouraged to stay away from one another while in transit.
      • Back Gate will be open for Dismissals only.

6. Q: When will this Hybrid Model of instructions start?  A: Once in the Red Tier, our Superintendent will declare us ready to move to the Hybrid Model. This will start a 2-week period to make necessary adjustments. Hybrid Teachers would begin working from the school site 5 school days before students begin attending in person. Staggered start days may be implemented by grade levels or grade spans in order to ensure a smooth and safe transition to in-person school.

7. Q: Will my child have the same teacher?  A: I truly cannot answer this question at this time. It will depend on 1) How many students are going to come back on campus. There will be Distance Learning teachers and Hybrid teachers, teachers will not be able to do both.  **Please know that I will do everything I can to make sure your child stays with the same teacher, but also know that this may not be possible.
