Welcome Back Students – McMillin’s 1st Week of Instruction

Welcome to our first week of the now infamous 2020-2021 school year. A year that will go down in history. I believe that there are going to be some very exciting things that are going to come out of this pandemic. Education will need to change. McMillin’s teachers and staff are ready. We are so excited to finally see students again. We missed you all very much.

There may be a few bumps along this path, but we are committed to every student. Especially our students and families of color that we and our school systems may not have judged fairly. We are here to listen and ready and willing to make our students’ and families’ elementary school experience the best it can possibly be. Thank you and let’s get started. – Mrs. Orr

Attendance

Instruction starts at 8:15 am (TK at 8:00). It is always a good idea to have your child log in a couple of minutes early. We are going to have to be very flexible this week. If your child is having a hard time getting on, your internet kicked them out, etc, please email the teacher. Don’t worry we will get all these glitches worked out. If your child can log on within the first 30 minutes, you don’t need to email. I would imagine that our IT department is going to be pretty busy tomorrow, so let your child’s teacher know if you run into any problems.

Student Passwords

Access to your child’s information is on our District’s Home Access Center. https://www.cvesd.org/parents/my_childs_school/home_access_center

Some of you emailed me about your TK or Kinder passwords not working. They should be working by tomorrow. I didn’t realize that our IT department was not finished with the uploads when I gave you your child’s passcodes. The TK and Kinder passwords will be two lowercase letters for your child’s initials. co123456= (students first and last initial + student ID + = ). You may have had the default password work before and now it is not. IT is reformatting all TK and Kinder students so they do not have to use the SHIFT key. Makes sense.

Student Devices

If you are finding that you will need a device for your child to be successful for distance learning. Please fill out this form. We will put you on a waiting list and get the devices to you ASAP. Here is the LINK:

School Expectations for Distance Learning

Our school year will begin with online instruction on Aug. 31 at 8:15 am for grades Kinder-6th Grade, TK students will start at 8:00 am, as campuses in CVESD remain closed due to the spread of COVID-19 across the community. Meanwhile, we continue to plan for the physical reopening of the school’s campus once it is safe to do so, with guidance from experts in science and public health.

Parents and families, McMillin School needs your help to set up kids for success this year. The students and staff at Corky McMillin Elementary School believe that a safe and positive online environment is important to a child’s learning in the digital classroom. To provide such an environment, McMillin Elementary School has established the following online norms and guidelines:

  1. Students should be ready to learn when the school day starts.  This means your child should be “school-ready” and prepared for a day of learning at 8:15 am.  We recommend that your child is dressed and has eaten breakfast so that learning may start when the school day starts. A computer and reliable internet connection and/or other materials such as paper, pencils, crayons or markers, books, and workbooks may be necessary to support your child’s work that day.  The school will provide the required learning materials in the coming days and weeks.
  2. Check for updates from your child’s teacher via Class Dojo or email.  Two-way communication is essential for your child’s success. Teachers will share schedules and ways to access lessons and activities. Please ensure the school’s office has the most up-to-date phone number and email address for your family.
  3. Please also check the school blog: https://mcmillinelementary.edublogs.org/ Updates are usually posted on Sundays.
  4. Create a working schedule for your household that supports academic time. You may need to ask others in the house to be mindful of a child’s learning. You may need to re-arrange some furniture or ask other members of the household to use quiet voices.  If possible, please do not have students working in a bedroom. Some parents have expressed that having a headset or earbuds with a microphone helps their child interact with focus in the live sessions.
  5. Be healthy during distance learning.  Take breaks throughout the day for movement. Students will have a 15 min break after 2 hours of instruction  and should drink water, eat a nutritious snack, use the bathroom, and stretch at breaks, as well as eat lunch at lunchtime. Promote physical activity and health. Provide time for your child to do activities that are “off-screen.” Teachers will build in more breaks depending on the age of your child.
  6. Respect the privacy and learning of others.  Students and guardians/parents should not record (neither video, nor audio) or take photos/screenshots of live sessions or others in distance learning.  Online tools, such as video chats and messages, should only be used as directed by teachers and staff.

In addition, your child’s teacher may have other norms and guidelines to ensure student safety and privacy for all students.

What about Second Family Affidavits?

If a student and his/her family reside with another family and they are unable to provide a document to verify their own residency, the attached “Second Family Affidavit” form needs to be submitted, along with the “Verification of Residency” form and supporting verification document. The form must be signed by representatives of the homeowner and parent/legal guardian. A copy of the photo ID of the homeowner and the parent/guardian must also be provided. Submit all forms using one of the methods above.

Thank you,
